About the Writer & Artist
Bassel Abi-Chahine is a multifaceted individual who brings together a passion for history, art, and storytelling. Having studied Illustration Design at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada, he embarked on a journey as a freelance Writer, Historian, Archivist, and Photographer currently based in Canada.
Bassel's expertise and dedication to preserving historical narratives shine through his work. He played a pivotal role in the documentary "Once Removed" alongside Turner Award nominee and contemporary International Artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan. This documentary, a silhouette dialogue between Bassel and Lawrence, drew from Bassel's unique and rare archive, offering factual insights into significant events. It made its debut at the Sharjah Art Biennial in 2019, capturing the attention of audiences worldwide.
In 2020, Bassel marked a significant milestone with the publication of his first book, "The People’s Liberation Army through the Eyes of a Lens 1975-1991," published by Dergham Press in Lebanon. This work delves deep into historical perspectives, providing invaluable insights into a tumultuous period.
Continuing his commitment to sharing Lebanon's complex history, in 2021, Bassel published his second book, "The Lebanese Civil War from 1975-1991 and Beyond," in collaboration with Zach Sex for AKinteractive Books in Spain. These publications stand as testaments to his dedication to shedding light on critical aspects of Lebanon's past.
Bassel's artistic endeavors extend beyond the written word. His exhibition, "Shot Twice," captivated audiences at the Bonniers Konsthall in Sweden from September 1st to November 7th, 2020, under the title "Dirty Evidence." This showcase of his photographic works provided a visual journey through history, leaving a lasting impact on those who experienced it firsthand.
In 2022, "West Beirut Shot Twice" found its place in the Asian Art Biennial in Dakar, further solidifying Bassel's presence in the global art scene.
In 2023, November 30th to November 15th 2024 Under the patronage of Ashkal Alwan, Home Works Forum 9 Exhibition, at Sursock Museum "West Beirut Shot Twice" found its place, among 28 international Artist further solidifying Bassel's presence in the global art scene.
